Week 58, 2019

Time for another update form our Gaston County Farm and Homestead,

In The High Tunnel:

  • Winter Carrots and Beets have been seeded.
  • Tomatoes are still in the ground producing very little, will come out when it is time to transplant winter/fall crops.
  • Collards, Kale, lettuce, Swiss Chard have been started indoors and should be ready for transplant outdoors in a few weeks.
  • Spinach, tatsoi and lettuce mix are waiting for cooler temperatures to be direct seeded.
  • Peppers are starting to ramp up production.
  • Turmeric still growing good, hoping for good crop before first frost.
Carrots over 120 days old not fully developed because of shade and lack of nutrients from cucumber interplanting.

Outside Plot:

  • Asparagus still doing well.
  • Beans have stopped producing and are being pulled out.
  • Lettuce – we’ve kept up with our weekly plantings but have had some issues.
  • Sweet Potatoes doing great, can’t wait to see what we have before first frost.
  • Watermelons were a big success.
Lettuce at 90 days old, as a result of shocking and turned bitter.
Lettuce succesion at 62 days old, perfect.

Chickens:

The chickens are now in the woods being rotated every 3-4 weeks. The land requires thinning and a bit of clearing as a result of being unmanaged for many years. We are using them to help disturb the soil for pasture seed, to hopefully work on a silvopasture system in the future.
